We edged ourselves through the cold, clammy cave, blanketed by a sea of glow worms. These fluorescent pin-pricks were so still, yet seemed to dance in their brightness and splendour.
Each was simply a tiny fleck of light protruding from the body of an insect. Yet together they were grandiose in their beauty… just bright enough to line our path to the cave’s opening. One glow worm would not have showed us the way home, but together they formed a path not unlike spectators at a mardi gras parade.
I felt like royalty, these little angels lighting my every step. Yet really, the glory belonged to them, these miracles of God’s creation. Each shining the light they were meant to shine, their lifetimes merely days – yet their purpose and beauty – unmistakeable.

We are lights too, dropped into this earth for but a moment. To some, we may not seem special – but to others, we’re beautiful and important.
Maybe you feel your brightness has diminished, that you aren’t really noticed or seen for who you are. But keep shining anyway, because the more you rest in God and His love, the more His glory will appear in you. He has a unique purpose for you, radiant glow worm, lighter of the way. You are absolutely magnificent, beyond what you know.
We can’t turn ourselves into stars, no matter how hard we try. But we can allow the great ‘Star of David’ to do His work through us. Let’s let Jesus lead us, and keep doing the work on earth that only we can do…

Dear Ali, your post was so timely for me. I had been wondering about some of the things that I do so routinely with my special needs daughter . .places she likes to go, that bless her. I couldn’t really see how me doing that with her would help anyone else but her, and I was trying not to feel bad about that. haha! Then yesterday, as we rode this little train at a park, one of the things she loves to do, one of the volunteers began sharing with us, about his life and what God had done. It gave me a little glimpse of something more going on behind us going places together like we do. Thank you!

I love glow worms, but they are very rare around here. I have seen them on the outskirts of our parish, and on the coast. If I look hard enough I could find a photo of the last one I saw. Over here the ones that glow are all female.

I have never seen a glow worm, but I like the comparison. I can relate to this statement: “To some, we may not seem special – but to others, we’re beautiful and important.” In our society of fame, it can be too easy to write ourselves off as ‘nobody’, when in reality, we mean something to God, and to those around us that do matter.
