I’m a self-confessed over-thinker. I am indecisive. I change my mind about my plans and goals all the time. I get lost in my thoughts quite a lot, and I worry easily.
I feel like I’ve spent much of 2013 pondering what 2014 holds for me. I tend to live in the future rather than the moment. But God keeps reminding me of who He is, and when I focus on Him my mind is renewed. I tell myself again and again that He will guide me forward.
Here are 10 truths about God which are helping me gain perspective today:
1. God is eternal.
“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:2)
2. God is infinite (impossible to measure or calculate).
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)
3. God is omnipresent (present everywhere).
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” (Psalm 139:7-8)
5. God is omnipotent (all powerful).
“Jesus replied, ‘What is impossible with man is possible with God.’” (Luke 18:27)
6. God is omniscient (all knowing).
“Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?” (Isaiah 40:13-14)
7. God is sovereign.
“What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do.” (Isaiah 46:11)
8. God is faithful.
“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)
9. God is true and truth. “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
10. God is love. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:8)
Lord, there is something wondrous about taking the time to reflect simply on who you are. Reminding myself of your character gives me such reassurance. Right now, it doesn’t matter what the future holds. What matters is who you are, and that you are with me always. Thank you for your peace, which flows like a river into each fretful thought – transforming my heavy heart into one of immense hope. God, remind me how to worship you, because true worship changes me.
