What delights you and draws you in? What are the things in life that take your breath away?
Beauty certainly invites us – beckons us… But even the most gorgeous moment can leave us wanting. Often, just as we’ve stumbled upon ‘perfection’ and ‘ultimate happiness’, something intrudes upon it.
C.S. Lewis describes our hunger for beauty in his book The Weight of Glory:
“We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words — to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it…
At present we are on the outside of the world, the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with the splendours we see. But all the leaves of the New Testament are rustling with the rumour that it will not always be so. Some day, God willing, we shall get in.”
We’re essentially external – peering in at beauty and perfection and all that it symbolizes. We, this side of heaven, are painfully aware how far from glory we actually are. We receive only glimpses and hints. But what wondrous previews they are… And how inspiring – the idea of capturing the grandeur of God however we can, whenever we see it, and passing it on – so others may partake in the hope of ultimate redemption….
So tell me again… What delights you? What draws you in? Enjoy it, celebrate it – but remember it’s only a taste of what’s to come…
Beautiful words. Well said. 🙂
Thank you Anissa 🙂 God bless.
Beautiful post. Nature – trees, flowers, clouds- it’s all so peaceful and pretty, I have no doubt they are a glimpse of God’s work and only a fraction of what we will know in heaven.
Thank you Janna. Yes! I love the thought that the best and most beautiful things we experience are just ‘hints’.
I love it!

I think beauty awakens our longing for Heaven. Thanks for the reminder that there is more to come than what meets the eye here. Great Lewis quite, by the way. =)
