I’m not the world’s best driver, and my record proves it. I blame this on the ‘dreamer’ in me, who often has her head in the clouds (and not on the road). But given the diminishing points on my license, and the real risk that bad driving entails, God and I needed to have a little chat recently. As a result, from now on, I am firmly resolved to drive with focus, and right on the speed limit at all times (I swear!)
So last night, on my way home, I drove exactly at the pace I felt I needed to. The driver behind me didn’t like it however, and loomed up behind me, lights flashing. But I wouldn’t be deterred. My mind was made up. I was going at the speed I felt comfortable with, and that was that.
It can be so easy to slip back into old habits and ways of living or thinking, and it’s a battle to keep our resolve. But it’s amazing what can happen when we simply choose to fight for what we believe in. To not give in.
One of the struggles my husband and I have faced is our son’s behaviour issues. His actions and reactions have left us and his teachers mystified and at our wit’s end many, many times. I don’t know how many parenting books I’ve read, or professionals we’ve seen… Sometimes things seem to be getting better, but then they get worse again, and we don’t know where else to go for answers.
But yesterday, after a difficult chat with his teacher, I made the choice not to give up hope. I believe God has great plans for my little boy’s life, and I know He has answers for us ahead. We may not be able to see the big picture right now, but that’s the point. Sometimes we just have to walk in faith through our valleys, asking for wisdom and strategies, yes, but above all knowing that God is in control. That he won’t abandon us or fail us.
He knows the burdens each of us carry, whether in marriage, or areas of employment, friendships or health. He is deeply aware, deeply concerned, and deeply invested in revealing His power and strength in the lives of His children.
He knows our tendencies to give up hope, but then – in His grace – hope keeps presenting itself in the form of Jesus. He who carried the cross before us, and went on to triumph over the grave.
So if you’re tempted to ‘speed up’ or shift from your resolves, take a minute to ask God for perspective. ‘Friends’ might pressure you to give up on people, or abandon your faith. But sometimes the only thing we’re holding onto is what will ultimately set us free – and his beautiful, glorious name is Jesus.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
