Fixing my eyes (on Him)

I’m not the world’s best driver, and my record proves it. I blame this on the ‘dreamer’ in me, who often has her head in the clouds (and not on the road). But given the diminishing points on my license, and the real risk that bad driving entails, God and I needed to have a little chat recently. As a result, from now on, I am firmly resolved to drive with focus, and right on the speed limit at all times (I swear!)

So last night, on my way home, I drove exactly at the pace I felt I needed to. The driver behind me didn’t like it however, and loomed up behind me, lights flashing. But I wouldn’t be deterred. My mind was made up. I was going at the speed I felt comfortable with, and that was that.

It can be so easy to slip back into old habits and ways of living or thinking, and it’s a battle to keep our resolve. But it’s amazing what can happen when we simply choose to fight for what we believe in. To not give in.

One of the struggles my husband and I have faced is our son’s behaviour issues. His actions and reactions have left us and his teachers mystified and at our wit’s end many, many times. I don’t know how many parenting books I’ve read, or professionals we’ve seen… Sometimes things seem to be getting better, but then they get worse again, and we don’t know where else to go for answers.

But yesterday, after a difficult chat with his teacher, I made the choice not to give up hope. I believe God has great plans for my little boy’s life, and I know He has answers for us ahead. We may not be able to see the big picture right now, but that’s the point. Sometimes we just have to walk in faith through our valleys, asking for wisdom and strategies, yes, but above all knowing that God is in control. That he won’t abandon us or fail us.

He knows the burdens each of us carry, whether in marriage, or areas of employment, friendships or health. He is deeply aware, deeply concerned, and deeply invested in revealing His power and strength in the lives of His children.

He knows our tendencies to give up hope, but then – in His grace – hope keeps presenting itself in the form of Jesus. He who carried the cross before us, and went on to triumph over the grave.

So if you’re tempted to ‘speed up’ or shift from your resolves, take a minute to ask God for perspective. ‘Friends’ might pressure you to give up on people, or abandon your faith. But sometimes the only thing we’re holding onto is what will ultimately set us free – and his beautiful, glorious name is Jesus.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

(Hebrews 12:1-3)

  1. Loved this post. I have a real problem with wanting to look at the flowers by the side of the road instead of where I am going. I really need to focus on Jesus in all that I do and forget about the rest of my problems and worries. So much truth to your words. Blessings.

    1. Hi Joy.
It’s hard isn’t it, but focusing on Him gives us so much perspective doesn’t it?
Thanks so much for reading and being a blessing.
      Lots of love,
      Ali

  2. Thank you for the precious encouragement to not give up. To remember that Jesus is with us and always still our hope. As a mom of a mystifying child, I am praying and believing with you! God bless you and yours, Ali!

  3. What a powerful, wonderful message of encouragement–hope in Jesus is our anchor, He won’t let us down. Praying with you about your son–“mystifying” likely holds tremendous gifts; how exciting to “watch and see” what God will reveal!! God bless you–love, sis Caddo

    1. What encouraging words – thanks so much Caddo. And yes, I’m believing our God has plans bigger than what we might realise now.
      Blessings and love to you,
      Ali

  4. Good Morning
Don’t give up – Do not FEAR – the Lord has a mighty plan for your son
Remember He counts the number of hairs on your Child’s head
We all can’t fit into a Earthly box but we always fit in God’s loving Plan for our life
    God Bless

  5. The driving analogy worked well with the point you made. It’s so easy to bump up our speed a few miles (or kilometers) per hour when pressured by a hurried driver, just like it’s easy to back down on our beliefs when it’s uncomfortable to stay the course.

I’m sorry you’re going through the issues with your son. In the moment, it’s little consolation to know God has a bigger plan. Hang in there and be strong.

  6. This was so beautifully written. God has certainly taught me this year that when our vision seems blurred and we can’t seem to find our way forward, to stick close to Him and He will lead us through. I take great comfort that while He is light, He is not uncomfortable being with us in our dark seasons. Praying the peace of His presence for you and your precious son xx

  7. Thank you Aimee 🙂 I appreciate you dropping by.
Yes, that’s so well put. I think the ‘blurry’ times can be the best at building our faith in the great source of light. So thankful for His willingness to walk through it with me.
Your prayers are much appreciated, thank you again xx
