When you are afraid, who do you trust?

Do you struggle with fear and anxiety?

I think most of us do sometimes, especially when life throws us a curve-ball.

But I like that the Psalmist in the Bible never says “I don’t struggle with fear”. Rather, he shares his strategy for how to respond when worry does come his way.

Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

When fear hits us, the battle begins – and it pays to look to God for help.

1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to cast our anxieties on God. When that flight is delayed or you just receive a terrible diagnosis, or your child is nowhere to be found… the Bible says to throw your fears on God’s shoulders, and trust him for the outcome. He cares for you, and will be with you through the valley ahead.

John Piper says this:

“We fight anxieties by fighting against unbelief and fighting for faith in future grace. We need to meditate on God’s assurances of this grace and ask for the help of his Spirit.”

Allow God to smooth out your anxieties as you read the promises of God and pray for the help of his Spirit.

He is with you and will never leave you alone, no matter how abandoned and scared you might feel.

  1. I love how the Psalms are honest about the reality of fear but that they also show us how to deal with it by turning to God. It is a fight sometimes but it’s encouraging that we are not alone.

  2. Fears and anxieties abound. To this I am no stranger. It is so wonderful to know that God takes that fear and tosses it far away as far as the east is from the west.
